Conservation For Life (Pictures Credit BBC, Jeff Wilson & Jameel Ahmad)
WDS is in the process of launching Conservation For Life. The Snow Leopard and all the animals that live in the Snow Leopard corridor are the focus of our work. The only way to protect these animals is to empower the locals who live on the front lines with these animals. Our project is looking to better the quality of life for the people and communities that can and do impact on all the anima ...

Trees For Life 2010
WDS established 4 nurseries in the Broghil valley starting in 2008/9. We are very pleased with the positive results from all these nurseries. In 2010 we established 3 new nurseries and expanded 2 of the older ones. Over 20000 trees were planted this year. The best results have been from the Poplars, Salix and Birch. Junipers refuse to grow "in captivity". We have also had good results from ...

Food For Life
One of the things missing in the higher altitudes is fish! WDS has funded and created the first high altitude fish nursery at Kishmanja. The aim of this nursery is two fold: 1. To offer the locals a new food and nutrition option and 2. To allow fish to be carried from this (end of the jeep track) location to other nurseries or farms further up the valley. If successful, this project will all ...

FOR LIFE
Our priorities are driven by the communities, most identified by them but WDS also offers options. Sometimes our offers seem so alien, that we have to teach the locals that they have choices. Our task is difficult and that is exactly why we have selected and started from a community that is very remote. A community that is 2000 strong living in a vast area of natural beauty and history. The ...

Access For Life
The mountains are breathtaking, the vistas magnificent and the places magical! However access in heaven is not simple at best of times. WDS has walked the paths and experienced the difficulties the locals face, especially the children and the elderly. One cannot imagine their six year old walking 3 kilometers to school over icy streams that have no proper bridges or paths that are prone to l ...

Education For Life
There are currently 140 boys in primary schools and only 18 girls. 169 children between the ages of 5 and 10 (83 Boys and 86 Girls) do not go to school because their parents cannot afford the books and the school fees. In some case the children do not have proper shoes and clothes. WDS has had the first ever in-depth population survey completed so that we could identify the ultra poor families. ...

Shelter For Life
Living in remote high altitude hamlets is hard enough but poor construction means that almost every home is plagued with leaking roofs, rising damp, poor ventilation and insulation. WDS has been consulting with the locals and we have agreed to provide short term help to the whole village of Chikar (22 houses) by providing polythene sheets so that the immediate problem of leaking roofs could be ...

Communication For Life
WDS provided Thuraya Satellite phones to two communities in the Snow Leopard corridor. These phones allow the locals to communicate with the outside world in case of emergencies. The locals buy scratch cards from their own funds and use this pay as you go service. WDS hopes to provide further phones in 2011 to two further communities.

Trees For Life 2009
Trees For Life is an innovative and long term sustainable project that has taken us over 10 years of practical effort to develop and launch. After spending years in the field, exploring and working informally with remote communities, we have developed a simple but effective project that is positive, non political and non invasive. It allows us to demonstrate the simple but long term benefits of ...
